This storm is the fourth to effect the area since the monsoon season started on June 28, 2006. With a max rain rate of 1.96in/hr., peak wind gust of 38mph and local storm reports, we have decided to classify this storm in the moderate category.
The storm only lasted a little under an hour, but during that time there were several periods of heavy rainfall. Looking at the photo at the bottom of this page you can see one of the rain shafts moving off the Superstition Mountains. In Gold Canyon, Al reported 0.24in. of rainfall. Below, is the Storm Reports from the NWS Forecast Office in Phoenix.
Throughout the day, 68,967 lightning strokes were recorded and plotted on the map, with 9,927 of those being within 50 miles of our location. Not only was there heavy rain, wind and lightning, but the temperature fell dramatically as well. From the time period between 3:30pm and 4:30pm the temperature dropped 24.3°F! The graph of this temperature fall can be seen below.
