2006 Monsoon Season Statistics

The 2006 Monsoon Season started on June 28th, when we recorded three days of the daily dew point average being at or above 55°F. The average daily dew points that started the 2006 Monsoon Season are as follows: June 28th: 59.0°F, June 29th: 59.1°F, June 30th: 57°F

The 2006 Monsoon Season ended on September 15th when a large trough moved through the area bringing in dryer air. The daily average dew point on September 15th was 49.0°F which signaled the end of the 2006 Monsoon Season. The average end date for the monsoon season is September 13th.

The total length of the 2006 Monsoon season was 79 days, with 71 of those being Monsoon Days. A monsoon day is when the daily average dew point is at or above 55°F. Looking at the graph, you can see the five monsoon breaks we had this season, when the dew point average dropped below 55°F.

During June 28th to September 15th, 25 storms affected the area. Fifteen of the twenty-five storms produced measurable precipitation (>0.01in.) making the 2006 Monsoon Season rain total 5.38in.. We rated 14 storms in the minor category, 7 moderate, 2 in the significant category and two storms this monsoon season that affect our location were severe (July 25th-26th and September 9th). The most amount of rain during one storm was 0.90in. on September 9th. The maximum amount of rain during one day was 0.92in., occurring on September 7th. The highest rain rate recorded was 7.48in/hr, during the severe thunderstorm on September 9th. During the 2006 Monson Season we recorded a total of 3,055,634 strokes of lightning! The most strokes recorded in one day, was on July 25th, with 281,321 strokes. The most strokes recorded during a one hour period was also on July 25th, with 66,862 strokes between 10:00pm and 11:00pm. Once again July 25th was the date when the highest stroke rate per minute was recorded as well, with 1,277/min at 10:30pm.   • July 10th to July 11th - First break in the monsoon season. The daily average dew point was 54.2°F on the 10th and 51.1°F on the 11th.

  • July 12th to July 21st - 10 consecutive monsoon days; 4 storms; during this period 0.14in. of rain was recorded.

  • July 22nd - Second break in the monsoon season with an average daily dew point of 53.1°F.

  • July 23rd to August 5th - 14 consecutive monsoon days; 5 storms; during this period 1.66in. of rain was recorded.

  • August 6th - Third break in the monsoon season with an average daily dew point of 54.5°F.

  • August 7th to August 18th - 12 consecutive monsoon days; 5 storms; during this period 0.55in. of rain was recorded.

  • August 19th - An average daily dew point of 53.7°F was recorded, which makes this the fourth break in the monsoon season.

  • August 20th to August 26th - 7 consecutive monsoon days; 1 storm; during this period 0.39in. of rain was recorded.

  • August 27th to August 29th - Fifth and longest break in the monsoon season, with daily average dew points of 54.9°F, 47.1°F and 54.9°F.

  • August 30th to September 14th - 16 consecutive monsoon days (longest stretch this monsoon season); 5 storms; during this period 2.25in. of rain was recorded.

  • September 15th - The 2006 Monsoon Season Ends
