Summary Of The Year 2006

The year 2006 started out with above normal temperatures and very dry conditions, with no measurable precipitation until March 8th, when 0.01in. of rain fell. This was the first time we recorded measurable precipitation since October 18, 2005! Phoenix Sky Harbor, on the other hand, had to wait until March 11th to end their 143 day long dry streak, when a total of 1.44in. of rain was recorded, which then broke the recorded for the wettest March 11th on record. Quite ironic to say the least. After the round of storms that moved through in March things turned fairly dry once again until the 2006 Monsoon Season started on June 28th and ended on September 15th. During the monsoon season, our area was impacted by 25 storms, with 15 of those producing measurable rainfall. The 2006 Monsoon Season rain total was 5.38in.. During this period we also recorded and plotted 3,055,634 strokes of lightning. For more detailed information on the 2006 Monsoon Season click on the following link. [Click Here For 2006 Monsoon Season Information] After the monsoon season, several storm systems moved through the area during the beginning portion of October. For the end of October through November the weather was rather dry with many days of above normal temperatures. Finally, in the middle of December the weather pattern began to change allowing several trough to form resulting in cooler and wetter conditions to end the year.

The highest temperature we recorded this year was 113.8°F on July 21st at 4:24pm and the lowest temperature we reached was 30.0°F on December 21st at 6:55am. The highest low temperature was recorded on July 22nd when the low temperature bottomed out at 96.6°F at 4:03am. No surprise, that this days high of 111.0°F was also the second warmest day of the year. The lowest high temperature of the year was 48.8°F which occurred on December 28th at 3:27pm. During the year, the daily high temperature was at or above the 90°F mark 145 times. The low temperature only reached or dropped below the freezing mark (32°F) 2 times during 2006.

The overall average temperature for 2006 was 72.7°F, which is 0.4°F cooler then 2005s average temperature of 73.1. Looking at the daily averages, the highest daily average was 103.7°F on July 22nd. The lowest daily average was on December 20th with an average daily temperature of 41.1°F. The highest monthly temperature average was 92.8°F, which occurred in July. The lowest monthly average temperature was 52.0°F, which occurred in December.

Note: The average temperature is not the daily high and the daily low average together, instead, it is all the temperature recordings added together for the entire year and then divided by the number of temperature recordings. A temperature reading to calculate the average is entered into our database every 15 minutes.

Here is a list of other yearly high and low values of interest:

Our area was effected by 48 storms during 2006. Out of those 48, 29 produced rainfall of 0.01in. or greater. We rated 33 storms minor, 10 moderate, 3 significant and 2 were severe. The first storm we placed in the severe category occurred during the overnight hours of July 25th into the early morning hours of July 26th. This storm brought with is heavy to moderate rain and very intense lightning with a peak stroke rate per minute of 1,277. The second storm we rated severe occurred toward the end of the Monsoon Season on September 9th, when we recorded 0.24in. of rain in two to three minutes and in nine minutes we recorded 0.67in.. The peak rain rate with this storm was 7.48in/hr.. Adding up the totals from all the storm that effected the area, the yearly rain total comes to 9.24in..

The most rain recorded in one storm system was during the March 10th-11th storm when 2.15in. was recorded in about 26 hours. Following that total was the storm the occurred on September 7th with a storm total of 0.92in.. The most memorable storm of 2006, in our opinion, was not the two severe storms, but the major winter storm that swept through the area on March 10th through March 11th. This storm left us with a rain total of 2.15in and it left a very impressive amount of snowfall on the Superstition Mountains.
