This is the 9th storm to effect the area this year and it brought our location 0.75in. of rainfall, which brings the yearly total to 2.43in.. At this same time last year the yearly total was 2.47in. mainly due to the significant storm that moved through the area on March 11th-12th, 2006 (Click HERE for storm data regarding that storm).
This storm consisted of around seven prominent areas of showers and thunderstorms as pieces of energy circulated around the low pressure system that moved slowly from Northern Baja to near Douglas and then up through New Mexico toward Colorado. We recorded the first 0.01in. of rain at 9:40pm on March 21st when light rain fell until about 10:30pm giving us a daily rain total of 0.03in.. On March 22nd three stronger areas of showers and thunderstorms moved through the area. The first wave moved into the area around 2:50pm giving our location windy conditions, a brief period of heavy rain and some small hail. After the heavy showers quickly moved through, light showers continued until 4:15pm leaving us with a total of 0.13in.. Another area of light showers moved through from 6:30pm to 7:00pm giving us an additional 0.03in. of rainfall. The heaviest of the showers moved through the area starting at around 8:40pm and lasted through 10:30pm. During this time we recorded 0.41in. of rainfall with a high rainfall rate of 1.75in./hr. occurring at 8:47pm.. The daily rain total for March 22nd was 0.57in.. On March 23rd two areas of light showers moved through the area giving us a daily total of 0.03in.. The first area moved through during the morning beginning at 9:45am and ending at 10:00am with a rain total of 0.02in.. Then from around 7:00pm through 11:30pm there were very light sprinkles to drizzle noted, which gave us an additional 0.01in.. On March 24th another area of light showers moved through the area around 2:15am giving us 0.01in. of rainfall. On March 24th the final area of light to moderate showers moved through the area beginning around 4:15am and ended by 6:30am giving us an additional 0.11in. of rain making the daily total 0.12in.. Adding all these daily totals together, we had a storm total of 0.75in.. Since some of the showers were convective in nature, some location across the valley had a much greater storm totals.
In Northwest Gold Canyon, Al reported 0.07in. of rainfall on March 22nd, 0.81in. on March 23rd and 0.31in. on March 24th, making the storm total 1.19in.. Paul in the Sierra Vista Community in Gold Canyon reported rainfall on March 23rd and 24th. Gerry, in West Gold Canyon, reported 0.05in. of rain falling between 9:20pm and 10:20pm on March 21st. On March 22nd 0.01in. fell between 12:10am-12:20am, 0.10in. between 2:30pm and 4:00pm, from 6:30pm to 7:10pm he recorded 0.25in., and 0.71in. was recorded between 8:30pm and 10:30pm. On March 23rd 0.01in. fell between 5:10am and 5:20am, between 9:40am and 10:00am an additional 0.02in was recorded. On March 24th 0.07 fell between 1:00am and 2:00am, another 0.01in. at 3:40am and 0.18in. between 4:50am and 6:30am, making the entire storm total 1.41in.. Also in West Gold Canyon, Robert reported a storm total 0.90in.. Tony, where Old Apache Land used to be, reported a storm total as of March 23rd at 8:10pm of 1.25in.. Adjacent the Freestone Park in Gilbert, Ken reported 0.94in. of rain falling between 1:00pm and 5:00pm on March 22nd, with a storm total as of March 23rd at 7:00am of 1.44in.. Carol, in Gold Canyon just off Kings Ranch road and Foothills Dr., reported 2.50in. of rain. Thank you for your rain reports! The above rain totals were reported to us by private individuals. There were numerous thunderstorms embedded within the waves of rain showers that moved through the valley. On March 21st we recorded 908 strokes, 25,280 strokes on March 22nd and 6,382 strokes on March 23rd, giving us a total stroke count of 32,498. The peak strike rate during this storm was 168 strokes per minutes on March 22nd at 2:54pm. The strongest thunderstorm that moved through our area was on March 22nd at around 2:45pm. During this period heavy rain, small hail and numerous cloud to ground lightning strokes were noted. As a matter of fact, the power at Weather Bus.com was off for an extended period of time due to this particular thunderstorm.
