This particular storm made for a pretty active morning across much of the valley. This storm also created a pleasant afternoon, with the temperature only rising to 88.6°F, which is the lowest high temperature we have recorded since May 28, 2006, when the high temperature was 84.7°F.
During the early morning hours a storm developed in the vicinity of Eloy/Casa Grande and began moving NNW toward the valley. During the storms movement toward the valley, more storms developed in front of it, resulting in another round of heavy rain for many location. Various washes were running, with numerous reports of motorist being stuck, when they tried to cross flooded roads and washes. Remember "Turn Around Don't Drown".
At our location, we received 0.39in. of rain with a max rain rate of 0.90in/hr.. The lightning with this particular storm was rather intense, with numerous cloud to ground lightning strikes. Throughout the day on August 24th, we recorded 71,952 cloud-to-ground strikes with 13,865 of those being positive cloud-to-ground strikes, which are the most dangerous.
Unlike the August 21st storm that moved through Mesa, wind was not a factor with this storm with a high wind speed of less then 20mph.
In Gold Canyon, Gerry reported 0.37in. of rain falling between 6:50am and 11:00am. Al, also in Gold Canyon, reported a storm total of 0.37in.. In Gilbert, near the Freestone Park, Ken reported 0.52in. of rain falling between 6:30am and 10:30am. The Kings Ranch Road rain gauge, in Gold Canyon, reported 0.39in.. Sandra, in Gold Canyon, reported 1 inch of rainfall between 7am and 11:30am. Thank you for your rain reports! The above rain totals were reported to us by private individuals.
