Comments:
This is the first area of showers and thunderstorms to affect the area since the 2008 Monsoon Season began on June 15th. The storm rain total was 0.17in. which is the most rainfall we have ever recorded for the month of June, since our records began in 2001.
With a moisture surge from the south, combined with some decent dynamics over the central and southern deserts (around Casa Grande), thunderstorms were able to form to the south and southwest of the Apache Junction/Gold Canyon region. With a steering current moving storms generally in a north-northeast direction, these storms were able to move into the area. Three separate thunderstorms moved through the region during the afternoon and evening on June 25th, resulting in brief heavy rainfall, small hail, gusty winds and a copious amount of lightning.
A dust storm, around 4:40pm, moved through, ahead of the first thunderstorms which affected the area, bringing gusty winds and reduced visibility (but still greater than one-quarter mile).
The peak wind gust with this dust storm occurred at 4:41pm and was from the SE at 29mph. Light rain began at 4:50pm, with heavier rainfall moving in around 5:01pm, with the first measurable rainfall (0.01in.) occurring at 5:02pm. The storm quickly decayed as is moved off to the north-northeast, with the rain ending by 5:15pm, leaving us with a rain total of 0.04in.. As this storm moved off, skies cleared slightly to our west, resulting in some sunshine, which produce a rainbow over Gold Canyon (see photo below). This storm also dropped the temperature considerably! The temperature at 4:40pm was 101.7°F, and by 5:10pm the temperature had plummeted to 83.0°F (18.7°F cooler)! The graph to the right shows this remarkable cool down.
A second storm rapidly developed in Gilbert/Mesa around 5:04pm. This storm continued to develop and move to the northeast toward Apache Junction/Gold Canyon. Rain along with gusty winds began once again around 6:10pm, with a max instantaneous rain rate of 2.22in/hr occurring at 6:15pm, along with a peak wind gust of 33mph from the west. Small hail, occurred at our location at 6:18pm. The storm moved out of the area by 6:25pm, leaving us with an additional 0.13in. of rafinall, making the storm total 0.17in..
Severe thunderstorms developed near Queen Creek around 8:35pm, and moved up into Kings Ranch/eastern Gold Canyon, by 9:05pm. This final area of thunderstorms only brought our location a trace amount of rain, however the cloud-to-ground lightning when these storms were in Queen Creek was phenomenal. Throughout the day, we recorded/plotted 23,783 lightning strikes, with the peak strikes per minute being 144, which occurred at 5:36pm. We were able to photograph some of the strikes, and they can be seen toward the bottom of this report.
