Comments:
Strong surface heating, combined with some added moisture, were the right ingredients to form a rather isolated thunderstorm over Northern Gold Canyon resulting in brief heavy rainfall, gusty winds and much cooler temperatures. We rated this storm in the significant category due to the high rain rates and the significant drop in temperature. This is the fifteenth storm to affect the area since the beginning of the 2007 Monsoon Season, on July 8th.
The thunderstorm formed over the area around 3:08pm, and we recorded the first 0.01in. of rain by 3:25pm. From 3:25pm to 3:45pm, heavy rainfall was noted, with a storm total of 0.26in.. The peak rain rate, during this storm, was 2.11in/hr. at 3:37pm. The rain also dropped the temperature considerably. As a matter of fact, the temperature was 107.4°F at 3:15pm, and by 3:30pm the temperature was 88.0°F!! That is a 19.4°F drop in temperature in fifteen minutes!!
Late in the afternoon/evening, strong to severe thunderstorms formed and moved through Magma and Coolidge, leaving some damage behind. In Magma, AZ, a report was made to the NWS, that roofs were blown off homes in the far east portion of the city. In Coolidge, AZ, power poles were knocked down, due to strong winds, with power outages from Highway 87 into downtown Coolidge.
