Showers and thunderstorms affected almost the entire valley during the afternoon and evening hours. Storm movement was quite slow, and storms where developing across the entire valley due to the combination of the added moisture, day time heating and outflows from the decaying thunderstorms across the valley. By looking at the radar loops and the Infrared Satellite image below you can see the size of this storm. Due to the size (in area) of this storm, we rated it in the moderate category.
At our location we received steady light to moderate rainfall, which produced a storm total of 0.39in.. The high rain rate was 0.19in. at 11:07pm on September 2nd. Wind was not a significant factor with this storm at our location, with a peak wind gust of 31mph at 6:43pm.
Some storms produced very heavy rainfall which caused flooding to occur in parts of the valley. Also, at 54th and Vanburen, hail was estimated at 0.75in, at 5:30pm.
Mike, in Gold Canyon, reported 0.50in. of rain falling during the late night hours on September 2nd. Also in Gold Canyon, Al, reported a storm total of 0.46in.. Gerry, in the southwest side of Gold Canyon, reported 0.54in. of rain between 8pm September 2nd and 1:20am September 3rd. In Gilbert, near the Freestone Park, Ken reported 0.42in. of rainfall, between 5pm and midnight. Thank you for your rain reports! The above rain totals were reported to us by private individuals.
