January 30-31, 2007 Storm Statistics

This particular storm system was two storm systems coming together over Arizona. One was coming up from the Southwest and the other was coming down from the Northwest. This storm brought much of the valley rainfall, and at higher elevations snow, for a couple days. This storm was the fourth storm to affect the area so far this year making the monthly/yearly rain total 0.94in..

At our location, the rain began on January 30th at around 11:40am, with light to moderate rain lasting until around 10:30pm. The light to moderate showers on January 30th gave our location a daily rain total of 0.11in. with a peak rain rate of 0.12in./hr. occurring at 11:42am. The second round of heavier showers moved through the area beginning around 2:00pm, on January 31st. This round of showers and occasional thunderstorms were more intense then the first round. By 4:00pm (2 hours later) the rain stopped and we recorded 0.21in. of rainfall, which brought the storm total to 0.32in.. A trace amount of rain was also recorded at our location on February 1st.

Across Kings Ranch Road where Apacheland use to be located, Tony reported 0.50in. of rainfall. Mike in Gold Canyon reported 0.30in. of rain. Al, in Northwest Gold Canyon, reported 0.34in. of rain. Gerry in Southwest Gold Canyon reported 0.17in. of rain on January 31st from 10:30am to 9:20pm. A.M.Z. in Tempe, reported 0.28in. of rain with pea size hail at 12:11pm on January 31st Thank you for your rain reports! The above rain totals were reported to us by private individuals. As the second round of showers and thunderstorms moved through the Mesa and Tempe areas small hail was reported and a funnel cloud was also reported to the NWS. In the high country, a fair amount of snow fell with 8in. falling at Arizona SnowBowl, 3.8in. at Flagstaff, 1-2in. at Heber, and 3in. at Payson.
