Comments:
This storm began when an outflow, produced by severe thunderstorms in Mesa, moved through the area around 5:00pm. The peak wind gust as the outflow moved through, was 39mph from the West. This particular outflow was very important in creating the thunderstorms that developed over the area, resulting in the very heavy rainfall that affected most of Apache Junction and Gold Canyon. Looking at the radar loop, below this discussion, from 4:54pm to 5:24pm you will see the outflow move into the area which then resulted in thunderstorms developing over the area. You can see this even clearer by watching the outflow cause thunderstorm growth just to the WNW of Florence.
The first 0.01in. of rainfall occurred at 5:30pm, associated with light rain from the thunderstorm as it developed. The light to moderate rainfall continued until 6:00pm. In this thirty minute time frame we recorded 0.06in. of rainfall. From 6:00pm to around 6:30pm, the thunderstorm continued to develop and strength, resulting in heavy rainfall, which led to an additional 0.21in. of rainfall in thirty minutes. The peak rain rate also occurred during this time, when at 6:17pm it peaked at 0.88in./hr.. (See the radar loop below from 5:32pm to 6:02pm) By 6:35pm, the thunderstorm had weakened substantially resulting in light rainfall, which continued until around 8:30pm. (See the radar loop below from 6:28pm to 6:57pm)The overall storm total was 0.35in..
John, at 18th Street and Indian School, estimated 0.10in. of rain. Robert, in western Gold Canyon reported approximately 0.40in. of rainfall. The automated rain gauge on Kings Ranch Road reported 0.43in. of rainfall. Ken, in Gilbert near the Freestone Park, reported little to no rainfall, but strong winds/dust and the darkest skies he has seen in several years, occurring at 4:30pm. Thank you for your rain reports! The above rain totals were reported to us by private individuals. The accuracy of these reports is unknown. If it rained at your location, let us know by clicking on the link at the top of the page titled "Public Rain/Weather Reports". Your report will be added to this page.
The severe thunderstorms that developed and moved through Mesa, caused a copious amount of flooding and wind damage, as can be seen in the reports received by the National Weather Service in Phoenix below:
