Around 4:00pm an area of thunderstorms in a line from about Florence to Casa Grande, produced an outflow (dust storm), which moved into Apache Junction and Gold Canyon around 4:25pm, resulting in lowered visibility and wind gusts to 30mph. (See the radar loop below this discussion from 3:56pm to 4:26pm) As a result of this dust storm, a thunderstorm rapidly formed on the west side of Gold Canyon into Apache Junction. The thunderstorm rapidly intensified resulting in very heavy rain from about central Gold Canyon westward through eastern Apache Junction. (See the radar loop from 4:17pm to 4:47pm). The first measurable rain with this storm occurred at 4:39pm, and within three minutes we had received 0.10in. of rainfall. Fifteen minutes after that, we had measured 0.32in. of rain, with a high rain rate of 2.81in./hr. occurring at 4:41pm. By 5:15pm, about thirty five minutes after the rain started, we had received 0.61in.. Light to moderate rain continued from 5:15pm to around 6:45pm as this thunderstorm weakened and moved out of the area. (See radar loop below from 5:17pm to 5:46pm) The overall storm total was 0.63in., making the July rain total 2.32in..
Due to all the rain in the area, and the heavy rainfall within the Superstition Mountains, washes throughout the area were running at high levels. Below this discussion are two still photos we took of a wash, along with two videos showing the rate at which the wash was running.
In west Gold Canyon, Robert reported approximately 0.40in. of rainfall. He also noted that from July 25th to July 30th he has measured about 2.00 inches of rain. Ken, in Gilbert near the Freestone Park, reported 0.05in. of rainfall. The automated rain gauge on Kings Ranch Road reported 0.04in. of rainfall. Thank you for your rain reports! This storm dropped the temperature a considerable amount as well. At 4:15pm, the temperature was 93.4°F, and by 5:10pm, the temperature had dropped 20.6°F, with a temperature of 72.8°F! The temperature of 72.8°F, was actually the low temperature for the entire day.
