This storm came in three "waves" through the day on October 8th with the first starting at around 1:25pm and the last wave ending around 11:20pm. The total for all three storms was 0.38in.. We have rated this storm in the Moderate category.
The first storm of the day moved into the area from the south at around 1:25pm, and was gone by 2:30pm. With this storm, we recorded 0.08in.. This storm also set the high rain rate for the day which was 1.64in/hr. at 1:31pm. By clicking on the first radar loop toward the bottom of this page you can see this storm moving into the area. Notice that as the storm came closer it quickly began to weaken and dissipate.
The second storm made itself well known before it even reached the area with some very nice clouds formation. Before the rain began, a dust storm moved through the area, with our location recording a 33mph wind gust at 6:12pm from the Southeast. After the dust storm moved through, light to moderate precipitation occurred between 6:20pm and 6:40pm, leaving us with a total for this storm of 0.26in.. With this storm, intense lightning was noted with a peak stroke rate per minute of 135, occurring at 6:33pm. Finally, a third smaller storm moved through the area at 11:11pm and ended at 11:20pm, giving us a total of 0.04in. This brought the storm total for our location to 0.38in..
Al, in NW Gold Canyon, reported 0.51in of rain. Barb, off Kings Ranch Road in Gold Canyon, reported rain at 1:25pm. Also, in Gold Canyon, Deb reported a storm total of 1.18in.. Adjacent the Freestone Park in Gilbert, Ken reported a storm total of 0.08in.. In Queen Valley, Rosie reported 0.40in.. Thank you for your rain reports! In some parts of the valley, this storm caused damage with large hail and strong winds. Below are some of the reports from the National Weather Service Forecast Office In Phoenix, Arizona.
The storms that affected the area on October 8th were associated with the system that brought the area precipitation on October 4th thru 6th. By looking at the six day water vapor loop below you can see this storm system enter and exit the area.
