This was the first major storm of the 2007 Monsoon Season, bringing the area an impressive amount of rain in a short period of time. We rated this storm in the "Significant" category due to rainfall totals.
During the morning hours on July 21st, a small area of showers moved through the area, giving us 0.01in. of rain. This rainfall was the first measurable rainfall we have recorded since May 8th (73 days). Skies cleared nicely during the morning hours allowing for a decent amount of surface heating to occur. By 5:30pm, strong to severe thunderstorms formed in the White Mountains and especially over the rim. As the thunderstorms rolled off the rim during the late afternoon hours, they continued to strengthen and move into the area. Heavy rain moved into the area from 8:20pm through 9:15pm, giving us 0.68in. of rain in just under an hour. During this time frame the high rain rate was 3.62in./hr. occurring at 8:59pm. Light to moderate rain continued until around 12:10am, on June 22nd. The total with the evening storm was 0.85in. of rainfall, making the overall storm total 0.86in..
The extremely heavy rainfall made numerous washes in the area flow and even created Flash Floods in other locations across the state. Below are reports made to the National Weather Service in both Phoenix and Flagstaff regarding flooding.
Lighting was quite impressive with this storm as well. The daily lightning total on July 21st was 104,126, with 57,635 of those being cloud-to-ground strikes. The peak strike rate was 469 per minute, occurring at 8:50pm.
